I wish GM had actually followed through with Saturn. Pontiac honestly made more sense than Buick to keep but China yadda yadda.

Seriously. Imagine an all-EV  Saturn lineup with their direct pricing, practical styling and features..... oh well, GM gonna GM. At least Hummer is back? Maybe once all cars are electric they’ll bring back Pontiac as their only ICE brand to compete with the Challenger.

I think they could come back...look at the branding of the GMC Hummer thing . That could easily turn into a Saturn branding for cars like the Bolt, a Pontiac branding for sporty hybrids or electrics. I’d be super stoked about an Oldsmobile...even if it’s a model designation .

No, Pontiac lives on, but with the most sales-hostile badging possible:

It’s not a bad idea, look at my comment above. Now apply your thinking and it’s almost foreseeing the future . Manufacturers allowed to produce limited models of “analog” cars in a boutique manner. It’d be a hit along with retrofitting classics with electric drive trains . Pontiac, Oldsmobile, Mercury...tons of potential

GM originally planned to keep Pontiac as a low volume specialty brand to sell through Buick-GMC dealers, with just the G8 and maybe a badge-engineered Firebird (the Solstice was always going to die), but the federal specialists appointed to oversee GM’s bailout and nationalization determined that they still had one brand too many, and even a vastly downsized Pontiac would be too much of an extra financial drain.

As long as there is an Iron Duke puttering away Pontiac will live on.

So basically forever.

Pontiac as an enthusiast brand could have worked. Imagine a Pontiac SS with more interesting stylish to compete with the Charger and a Firebird on the Camaro platform! Not sure if they would have made it that far though.

Introducing the Chevrolet Saturn EV!

It would have worked only as long as marketing and R&D costs stayed extremely low, basically just putting new badges on Chevys and Holdens and not running any ads. With Holden dead and the Camaro on its way out, if the brand had made it this far, it would be dead within a few years, anyway.

Also, whether Buick-GMC dealers would have bothered to stock any inventory as crossover and pickup sales heated up is a big question. I could imagine them trying desperately to talk anyone trying to special order a 2021 Firebird Trans Am into just driving home one of the GMC Sierras they already have on the lot.

If I remember right, the brand never turned a profit in the S car years. It was only when they started selling badge engineered cars and using shared platforms that they were profitable. The early S cars were a good deal for their price, but they never really got better in terms of power or interior refinement into the lat 90s and early 2000s. That’s not to say I don’t want another.

I loved my old saturn wagon, had that thing for like two or three years which is an eternity for me, dead reliable, burned more oil than gas, best $700 I ever spent.

Expecting a car to last more than 80k miles is just madness.

Saturn was a good idea but got GM'd. If Opel could go from losing money to turning a profit in only a year or two after GM sold them then I'm sure Saturn could have been sustainable.

Madness considering the GM design ethic of the ‘80's. They figured make em last until the 3 year trade in period and then let the next sucker deal with the headaches! Although I had pretty good luck with my ‘84 Citation X-11, I have to say it was worn out at 100,000 miles.

Cars have gotten a lot better today. I have a 110,000 mile ‘07 chevy uplander and also a 110,000 mile Civic Si and both in most aspects of ride finish and performance are indestinguishable from new.....
